Ministry of Law Strengthens Community Legal Aid Posts to Improve Access to Justice
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights for the Special Capital Region of Jakarta is strengthening the Legal Aid Post (Posbankum) programme through training at the sub-district level throughout North Jakarta, as part of the government’s efforts to bring access to justice closer to the community. “The training activities carried out are a concrete step to ensure that legal aid services run optimally and reach the intended targets,” said the Head of the Division of Legislation and Legal Development at the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights for the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, Kanti Mulyani, during a training session in Warakas, Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, on Tuesday. She said that strengthening Posbankum is a national programme of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, which aims to provide direct legal services within the community by prioritising the resolution of problems outside of court. “We are providing support so that our paralegal colleagues can provide maximum legal aid services,” she said. She added that the paralegals generally come from local residents, so they understand the social characteristics and conditions of the community in their area. “The paralegals we are preparing do indeed come from the area,” she said. According to her, local residents understand the characteristics of the community and the conditions of their environment, and there are no strict, specific educational requirements. Based on visits to several Posbankum, the most common issues consulted by the community include cases of gang violence, domestic violence, and inheritance issues. In some inheritance cases, the problems are not simply due to a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of in-depth understanding of the mechanisms and distribution in accordance with legal provisions. She hopes that through the strengthening of Posbankum, it can be at the forefront of providing legal education and assistance.
