Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Kemenimipas) has granted special remission and sentence reduction (PMP) for Waisak 2570 BE 2026 to 1,052 Buddhist inmates and detainees nationwide.
Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto stated in Jakarta on Sunday that the special remission and PMP is a fulfillment of rights for inmates and detainees who meet administrative and substantive requirements as per regulations.
“This is a form of national recognition for inmates and detainees who have shown positive behavioural changes and actively participated in rehabilitation programmes while serving their sentences in prisons, detention centres, and juvenile facilities,” Agus said.
Meanwhile, five juvenile detainees received Special PMP I, which involves sentence reduction.
According to Kemenimipas data, there are 1,944 Buddhist inmates and detainees nationwide. Of these, 1,047 qualify for Waisak special remission.
The highest number of recipients for the 2026 Waisak special remission and PMP is from North Sumatra with 186 people, followed by West Kalimantan with 163, and Jakarta with 140.
“The Waisak occasion should serve as a time for self-reflection to continue improving behaviour, strengthening self-control, and enhancing spiritual and moral quality in life,” he added.
Based on the Correctional Database System as of 21 May 2026, the total number of detainees and inmates nationwide is 270,779, comprising 55,457 detainees and 215,322 inmates.
Meanwhile, the number of children and juvenile detainees nationwide as of 22 May 2026 stands at 1,663, including 323 children and 1,340 juvenile detainees.
“The granting of special Waisak remission and PMP in 2026 saved Rp840,525,000 in inmate meal budgets and Rp2,145,000 for juvenile detainees,” he said.
Mashudi expressed hope that the remission and PMP would encourage inmates and juvenile detainees to continue improving themselves, comply with regulations, and prepare to reintegrate healthily and productively into society as a sign of the correctional system’s success.
