The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah of the Republic of Indonesia has welcomed a fatwa issued by the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah through the Tarjih and Tajdid Council regarding the permissibility of relocating dam animal slaughter ceremonies to Indonesian soil under certain conditions.

M. Afief Mundzir, Director of Regular Hajj Congregation Development at the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, stated that the fatwa serves as an important guide for pilgrims in conducting worship in a more orderly and directed manner.

“We welcome this fatwa because it provides clear guidance for pilgrims. Additionally, this policy can reduce the potential for illegal payments in Saudi Arabia, whilst also facilitating pilgrims as there is now an option in fulfilling dam obligations,” said Afief in a statement received on Sunday (15 March).

According to him, the fatwa from the Tarjih and Tajdid Council of Muhammadiyah, which permits the relocation of dam animal slaughter to Indonesian soil in accordance with Islamic law, demonstrates consideration of the current realities of dam animal slaughter ceremonies in the Holy Land, which face several challenges.

“This perspective also reflects consideration of public welfare, particularly in ensuring that the slaughter process can be managed properly and that meat distribution can provide broader benefits to those in need within the country,” Afief continued.

He added that the government continues to create space for synergy with various religious organisations to strengthen the management of hajj worship that is more orderly, transparent, and beneficial to Indonesian pilgrims.

“We appreciate this religious perspective from the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah. The hope is that this guidance can help pilgrims conduct worship more peacefully, orderly, and in accordance with Islamic principles,” Afief concluded.
