Southeastern Brazil has been struck by devastating floods and landslides. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) revealed that there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens (WNI) becoming victims in the affected areas.

“Regarding Indonesian citizens in Brazil, according to records from the Indonesian Embassy in Brasília as of August 2025, which is based on verified self-reported data that naturally requires further verification, the total number of Indonesians throughout Brazil is 304 persons, and to date there have been no reports of Indonesians affected by the disaster,” said Acting Director of WNI Protection at Kemlu Heni Hamidah at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Friday, 27 February 2026.

Heni assured that the Indonesian Embassy in Brasília continues to monitor the disaster situation in Brazil. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also continuously monitoring the condition of Indonesians there.

“Regarding the situation of Indonesians in Brazil, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Indonesian Embassy in Brasília, is carefully monitoring the situation of major flooding and landslides in Minas Gerais state, Brazil caused by high rainfall intensity since February,” she said.

Heni mentioned that the Indonesian Embassy in Brasília has issued alerts to Indonesians in Brazil to safeguard their safety. She requested that Indonesians in Brazil maintain communication with the Embassy.

“The Indonesian Embassy in Brasília has also issued alerts to all Indonesians in Brazil to increase vigilance, prioritise safety, and maintain communication with the Indonesian Embassy in Brasília,” she said.

Previously, heavy rain in southeastern Brazil caused flooding and landslides. The disaster has resulted in at least 20 deaths and dozens of others missing.

According to news agency AFP on Tuesday, 24 February, more than 400 people were forced to evacuate their homes in Minas Gerais state following heavy rain that began on Monday. The city of Juiz de Fora recorded 16 deaths, whilst four people died in the city of Uba.

The series of disasters has triggered overflowing rivers, landslides and collapsed buildings. The mayor of Juiz de Fora, Margarida Salomao, declared a state of emergency.

This city with a population of more than half a million has experienced record-breaking rainfall intensity for February in its history. Salomão described the situation as extreme, with some areas isolated and at least 20 landslides.
