Ministry of Environment Summons Managers of Bantargebang Waste Management Facility Following Deadly Rubbish Collapse
The Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has affirmed that he will summon the managers of the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) following a waste landslide that claimed four lives on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
According to Hanif, the Law Enforcement Deputy of the Ministry of Environment and Jakarta’s Environmental Agency is currently investigating the TPST Bantargebang managers and will seek statements from relevant parties to establish accountability.
“Since this is now under investigation by the Law Enforcement Deputy, we will promptly summon all those who must be held responsible in this matter. This concerns human life and physical bodies – these cannot be quantified. This must certainly be a matter of the deepest concern,” said Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq in a statement confirmed from Jakarta on Sunday.
He reminded that under Law No. 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, facility managers who deliberately carry out acts exceeding environmental quality standards and thereby cause serious injury or death face imprisonment and fines.
“Should someone be held responsible? Yes, of course. The Bantargebang TPST is government property in the special region of Jakarta. The Jakarta provincial government must certainly be held responsible,” he stated.
He assured that the government will continue efforts to search and verify that no other individuals remain buried by the waste landslide.
Previously, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Jakarta reported that the latest death toll from the waste landslide at Bantargebang TPST stands at four persons.
In data confirmed on Sunday at 10:00 p.m. Jakarta time, the four victims are warung (small food stall) owner Enda Widayanti and Sumine, along with two waste truck drivers named Dedi Sutrisno and Irwan Suprihatin.
