Mangroves are not merely a type of plant; they are a unique structure that grips mud amid the ebb and flow of tides, protecting coastlines from erosion, and providing shelter for life beneath them.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry or the Environment Control Agency has launched the Kenali Lingkungan Bareng Anak Muda (Kelana) campaign to strengthen the sustainable restoration of mangrove ecosystems.

Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat stated that the Kelana campaign involves producing a “feature documentary” video themed around the protection and management of mangrove ecosystems, in collaboration with National Geographic (NatGeo) Indonesia.

“Why is the mangrove documentary titled ‘Menjaga Akar Negeri’? So that mangroves are not just seen as part of plants; they are a unique structure that grips mud amid the tides, protects coastlines from erosion, and provides protection for life beneath them,” said Jumhur during the Launching Program Kelana and Screening of Menjaga Akar Negeri: Mangrove Indonesia untuk Dunia event in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.

He added that mangroves offer high ecological benefits as erosion controllers, habitats for biodiversity, and carbon stores, as well as socio-economic benefits including sites for fishery productivity, sources of food, and venues for education and tourism.

Indonesia, Jumhur continued, has 3.45 million hectares of mangroves spread across 37 provinces, accounting for 23% of the world’s mangroves.

This figure, he said, is an honour, but on the other hand, it represents a moral responsibility to the world.

Therefore, in addition to screening the documentary video, they have also produced the first episode of the Kelana educational video series with NatGeo Indonesia, inviting young people to learn about peat ecosystems and mangrove ecosystems.

They hope that Kelana can serve as a transformative learning medium that inspires students and pupils to take action, observe directly, and understand mangrove ecosystems.
