Jakarta — The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has revealed that Brunei Darussalam is looking at Indonesia’s energy transformation initiatives.

“This is a golden opportunity for regional collaboration. Brunei sees that Indonesia has taken greater strides and has a more structured approach to developing power generation from various energy sources, whereas Brunei currently relies on gas for 99 per cent of its electricity generation and wishes to reduce that proportion,” said Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.

Speaking in Jakarta on Sunday, Bahlil stated that Brunei is preparing to increase its national installed generating capacity five-fold from its current level, or to add 4 gigawatts (GW) to its existing installed capacity of 1 GW.

Amid an increasingly dynamic global energy agenda, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam are capitalising on the momentum of an international meeting in Tokyo to strengthen strategic cooperation in the energy sector.

This occurred when Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia held a strategic bilateral meeting with Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei Darussalam, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Mohamad Azmi Bin Haji Mohd Hanifah.

This ministerial-level meeting took place during the Indo Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum (IPEM) in Tokyo, Japan, on Sunday (15 March) local time.

The meeting marks a new chapter in which Brunei, long known as one of Southeast Asia’s major oil and gas producers, is now seriously considering Indonesia’s energy transformation approach.
