Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) is set to train 5,777 primary school teachers to gain the expertise needed to teach English as a subject to primary school pupils through the Primary School Teacher Competency Development Programme for Teaching English (PKGSD-MBI).

The Director General of Teachers and Education Personnel (Dirjen GTK) of Kemendikdasmen, Nunuk Suryani, stated that this training represents the inaugural session in the series of PKGSD-MBI programmes, which will be implemented over the next three years.

“In this first phase, we report that 5,777 teachers will participate. With a target of 90,447 teachers, the training will be conducted in stages each year over the next three years,” Nunuk said during the launch of the PKGSD programme, which was broadcast live on the Kemendikdasmen YouTube channel in Central Jakarta on Friday.

Furthermore, she explained that the 5,777 teachers, hailing from 177 regencies/cities, are prepared to undergo English teaching training using a combined method that integrates online, offline, and community learning support to ensure teachers receive hands-on learning experiences.

Nunuk added that Kemendikdasmen has coordinated with regency and city education offices, so that teachers who complete the training will subsequently be assigned to teach English to Year 3 pupils in their respective schools starting from the 2027/2028 academic year.

In that academic year, she targets 58,896 primary schools to begin implementing English as a compulsory subject for Year 3 pupils.

“Since this will be implemented in Year 3, we hope that for this pilot, the teachers will be mapped by the education offices to teach in Year 3 classes. In this academic year, 58,896 schools will start applying English as a compulsory subject in Year 3,” Nunuk said.
