Minister Purbaya Presses Customs Chief Djaka over Tiffany & Co Sealing
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa pressed Director General of Customs and Excise Djaka Budhi Utama after the investigation into alleged administrative violations concerning goods imported by Tiffany & Co remained unresolved. Djaka stated that the examination of administrative procedures for imported luxury gold jewellery commodities by Tiffany & Co is still not complete, even though the sealing was carried out earlier this year, precisely in February 2026. ‘Regarding the progress on Tiffany & Co, a joint study or audit is currently being conducted by the Audit Director, and we have not yet received the results,’ Djaka said. Responding to Djaka’s statement, Purbaya quipped, ‘So we are still confused, sir? It’s not clear.’ Djaka replied by affirming that ‘an in-depth examination is still being carried out to determine whether Tiffany has committed a violation, because the import documents will certainly be scrutinised.’ Hearing this, Purbaya was immediately puzzled, as Tiffany & Co outlets at several points in Jakarta had already been sealed by the Directorate General of Customs and Excise since February 2026, yet the issue had not been clearly identified by customs officials. ‘Mr Djaka, if you are still unsure, why was it sealed?’ Purbaya asked, leaving Djaka silent. Purbaya then continued, asking Djaka to immediately investigate. ‘Please investigate later, sir,’ Purbaya said. Djaka subsequently added that an audit had been conducted and they are just awaiting payment from Tiffany & Co as the deadline has not yet passed. ‘Meanwhile, the fine we have imposed is around Rp 97 billion,’ Djaka emphasised.
