Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir stated that 21 sports disciplines from the National Sports Grand Design (DBON) are ready to be implemented in schools throughout Indonesia, starting from the elementary, junior high, and high school levels.

In an official statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, the Minister explained that he had coordinated this with the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti.

The 21 DBON sports disciplines are Olympic priority sports, namely athletics, gymnastics, aquatics, badminton, weightlifting, rock climbing, archery, football, shooting, judo, boxing, taekwondo, cycling, beach volleyball (2x2), basketball (3x3), rowing (rowing and canoeing), fencing, wrestling, and equestrian.

In addition, there is also a world heritage sport that belongs to the Indonesian nation, namely pencak silat.

The Minister explained that each school level will be given a choice to implement the DBON sports disciplines with a different number of sports according to the level.

At the elementary school level, he added, they will be given a choice of two sports, while at the junior high school level, they will choose four sports, and at the high school level, six sports.

Furthermore, for the high school level, they will be given the option to implement the parent sports, namely swimming, athletics, and gymnastics.

“This is adjusted to the conditions of the supporting facilities of each school,” he said.

The Minister said that the implementation of the DBON sports disciplines at the school level, starting from the elementary school level, is part of an effort to prepare young athletes from an early age.

By pursuing a particular sport from the elementary school level and continuing to the next school level, students can develop as student athletes who are ready to compete at the national and international levels.
