Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), Arifah Fauzi, stated that People’s Schools are expected to be more than just places of learning, but also examples of child-friendly schools. According to her, education plays a strategic role in breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

This was said by Arifah during a visit to the 17 Tabanan People’s Middle School (SRMP) in Tabanan Regency, to ensure that the People’s School Program is running as intended.

“People’s Schools are part of the President’s Priority Program to expand access to quality and equitable education for all children. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty,” said Arifah in a statement on Wednesday (February 25).

She emphasized that child protection in the educational environment must be understood comprehensively. This includes not only preventing physical violence but also ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment so that children can develop optimally psychologically and socially.

“Schools must be spaces where children feel valued, heard, and protected. When children feel safe and comfortable, the learning process will be more effective, and their positive character can be formed well,” she said.

In addition, the Minister of PPPA also expressed appreciation to the teachers and education staff who are considered to play a significant role in building a culture of discipline, mutual cooperation, and strengthening student character in the school.

Meanwhile, the Head of SRMP 17 Tabanan, Putu Jaya, said that the school he leads currently accommodates 74 students, all of whom come from low-income families. He believes that there have been significant positive changes in the students since they joined the People’s School.

“The most noticeable changes are their discipline, spirit of mutual cooperation, and increasing sense of responsibility. We are touched and proud to see children from low-income families now able to attend a quality school with good facilities,” said Putu Jaya.

He hopes that the reach of People’s Schools can continue to be expanded so that more children from disadvantaged families have the same educational opportunities.

“In my opinion, education is the most important thing in alleviating poverty. If access to education is opened as widely as possible, then the future of children will be much brighter,” he added. (H-3)
