Minister of Environment Targets to Start the Bekasi Raya PSEL Project in March 2026

JAKARTA - Minister of Environment and Forestry Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said that the construction project of a waste to energy facility for processing waste into electricity (PSEL) in the Bekasi Raya area is planned to take place starting March 2026.

“We welcome waste to energy as requested by President Prabowo Subianto for Bekasi Raya. Including Bekasi City and Bekasi Regency. The groundbreaking will be carried out this March as well,” he said in Cikarang, Monday, quoted by Antara.

He explained that the program was a direct order from President Prabowo Subianto as a strategic step in efforts to overcome waste problems, especially in the largest industrial area in Southeast Asia.

According to him, the planning for the construction of this facility in this month for Bekasi Raya has gone through the results of coordination with the Minister of Investment and Industrialization/Head of BKPM as well as the head of Danantara, Rosan Roeslani.

However, he reminded that the process of building waste to energy facilities takes 2.5 to 3 years to be fully operational. During this period, waste handling must continue to be carried out to the maximum.

“During the transition period, we all still need hard work to handle waste, including those here. Waste handling upstream must be the same as other districts and cities,” he said.

He emphasized that the problem of waste was not solely the responsibility of regional heads, but it required the active role of all elements of society, including the TNI-Polri elements and the forum for coordination of regional leaders or Forkopimda.

“Of course, the Regent and his team must work hard, supported by friends from the TNI-Polri, Mr. Dandim, Ms. Police Chief. This must be down, without the involvement of all of us, Mr. Regent can’t handle it. Then the socialization to the community needs to be continued and implemented,” he said.

He also encouraged local governments to continue to socialize to the public so that they do not throw away garbage indiscriminately. Enforcement of minor criminal offenses needs to be applied for violators of waste management rules.

“That in fact this garbage is not the responsibility of the Regent. But each of us, the community does not mean paying for the distribution of garbage to be thrown away as they please. We ask the Regent to prosecute lightly. If not, this will not be finished. So this large amount of garbage in Bekasi needs the involvement of all of us,” he said.

Hanif also highlighted the condition of the Burangkeng Landfill in Bekasi Regency which had experienced excess capacity so that emergency handling and comprehensive strategies from the local government were considered very urgent.

“I believe the Regent has a comprehensive strategy to deal with this. Hopefully, under the guidance of the Regent today, we can finish the garbage problem step by step. Of course, it requires support from the Forkopimda,” he said.
