Jakarta, VIVA – Indonesia’s Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat has stated that the Bantargebang TPST will only accept residual waste starting from 1 August 2026, thereby encouraging the public to make waste sorting a habit from home. For this reason, he commended the Jakarta Provincial Government’s (Pemprov DKI) roadmap towards halting open dumping practices at the Bantargebang TPST, one of which involves the waste sorting movement from home. “This is a major step that must be supported collectively. A nation’s civilisation is also determined by how we treat waste,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday, 10 May 2026. According to Jumhur, the various waste sorting facilities prepared by Pemprov DKI Jakarta need to be utilised consistently so that the culture of sorting waste truly grows into a new habit for the community. He stated that Jakarta has great potential to become a pioneer in the waste sorting movement for other cities in Indonesia. Through collaboration between government, business actors, and the community, Jakarta is encouraged to become a national pioneer in the waste sorting culture that starts from households, office areas, to business centres. Meanwhile, the Head of the Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, conveyed that when the community starts getting used to sorting waste at the source, most of the waste can actually be resolved from upstream. “In that way, only a small amount of residue needs to be processed at the final processing facility,” he said. He added that Rorotan Kelurahan and several other areas have begun implementing the waste sorting system and will serve as examples to be replicated in various parts of Jakarta. “This movement will not succeed without community involvement. Therefore, we invite all residents to start getting used to sorting waste from home so that sorting waste truly becomes a new, sustainable culture for Jakarta,” said Dudi.
