Minister for Communications and Digital: Meta Must Comply with Indonesian Law as It Profits from Indonesia
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesian Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid said Meta must comply with the laws applicable in Indonesia.
“The overall message from the Indonesian government is that Meta, as an industry based here and operating in Indonesia, must also comply with the laws in force in Indonesia,” Meutya said in Senayan, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (4 March 2026).
Meutya carried out a sudden inspection (sidak) at Meta’s office in Sequis Tower Building, Senayan, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Wednesday.
They entered Meta’s office around 15:20 WIB and left at 16:33 WIB.
This sidak is a follow-up to Article 40 of the ITE Law, which states that the government is tasked with protecting safety and public interest from harm caused by misinformation and disinformation.
She explained that the action was taken after the government had repeatedly communicated with Meta, both formally and persuasively.
However, because many obligations were still unmet, the government ultimately conducted the sudden inspection.
Meutya Hafid said that they had met with Meta to convey a number of requests.
“First, openness of the algorithm, and openness of content moderation. Then to report issues that are indeed the obligations to report. There were also questions that could not be answered yet; we asked for increased supervision,” she said.
Therefore, adequate oversight is needed so that the digital space remains safe and protects the public.
However, to date there has been no definite explanation regarding the number of parties responsible for supervising disinformation content.
Meutya explained that the most common disinformation relates to health issues.
She said she has received many complaints from doctors and health workers about mis information that has had serious impacts, even resulting in the loss of lives of children and members of the public.
