Minister Arifah: Enactment of Domestic Workers Protection Law Proves State's Presence in Safeguarding PRT Rights
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Arifah Fauzi stated that the enactment of the Domestic Workers Protection Law (UU PPRT) serves as tangible proof of the state’s presence in protecting and fulfilling the rights of domestic workers.
“Through this law, the state guarantees the fulfilment of rights and protection for domestic workers, such as fair wages and working hours, health and employment social security, as well as protection from all forms of violence and discrimination,” she said when contacted in Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to her, the establishment of this law is an important milestone in the recognition and protection of domestic workers in Indonesia.
Her office welcomes the enactment of the UU PPRT, which coincides with Kartini Day and precedes Labour Day.
Arifah Fauzi added that 84% of the approximately 4.2 million domestic workers in Indonesia are women.
Additionally, around 20.09% or 143,000 domestic workers are children under 18 years old.
“The UU PPRT is present to prevent child labour practices in the domestic sector, which have long been invisible and difficult to monitor. This law also forms part of the strengthening of the care economy. Recognition of care work performed by domestic workers, such as child care, elderly care, and care for persons with disabilities, is an integral part of the care economy,” she said.
Therefore, according to her, the recognition and protection of domestic workers serve as an investment in the nation’s social and economic resilience.
