Military warns demonstrators

SURABAYA: Chief of the East Java's Brawijaya Military Command Maj. Gen. Imam Utomo warned disillusioned workers yesterday against staging street demonstrations.

The general suggested that instead of demonstrating, workers should send a delegation to discuss their demands with their employers.

"Workers should not hold a 'long march' to the manpower office to file their complaints. Demonstrations must be checked," he said. Street rallies disrupt traffic, he was quoted by Antara as saying.

He was commenting on recent street protests involving workers seeking better pay. (pan)
