Military warns college over PKI
SEMARANG: Maj. Gen. Yusuf Kartanegara, the outgoing chief of the Diponegoro Military Command, urged the Satya Wacana Christian University in Salatiga to stop employing three staff lecturers who turned out to have had past links with the outlawed Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), Antara reported.
Yusuf said there is a danger that these lecturers might try to slip in communist teachings in their class.
"I think it is very dangerous to give anyone who was involved with the outlawed party strategic employment like teaching," he said. "They would not only be teaching their respective field of expertise, they might try to teach the principles of their party," he said.
He said regulation banning anyone with past PKI links taking up strategic jobs such as in the military, or as civil servants, teachers and lecturers still stands.
The military command early this year said it learned that three Satya Wacana lecturers had been former political detainees because of their PKI connection. The university has said that it was still considering what to do with the three lecturers. (emb)
