Military against PDI rebel's move
SEMARANG, Central Java: Rebel leader of the Indonesian
Democratic Party (PDI) Jusuf Merukh plans to set up rival local
executive boards throughout the province.
Jusuf chairs a rival board of leadership which he set up last
year to challenge the democratically-elected PDI chief Megawati
Sukarnoputri.
"Rival chapters will be formed in regencies where PDI has the
most supporters, including, Sragen, Banyumas, Semarang, Solo and
Pati," he said.
But his move is opposed by the Central Java military chief
Maj. Gen. Soeyono, who stressed that the government recognizes
only Megawati.
"We are suspicious of Jusuf's motive. His plan is unlawful,"
he said. (har/pan)
