A brutal and deadly attack by Israel and the United States against Iran on Saturday, 28 February shocked the world.

Migrant CARE expressed deep concern over the escalation of armed conflict that could trigger a humanitarian crisis. Executive Director of Migrant CARE Wahyu Susilo stated that as an organisation focused on advocacy and protection of Indonesian migrant workers, Migrant CARE believes the escalation of conflict in the Middle East could have a direct impact on hundreds of thousands of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) currently working and living in various countries across the region.

“Uncertain conditions, proximity to conflict zones, and limited access to information and protection leave migrant workers living in anxiety and insecurity,” said Wahyu in a statement on Monday, 2 March.

He noted that war and the use of weapons not only reflect the arrogance of power. However, they also place vulnerable groups, particularly migrant workers, in situations full of threats and uncertainty.

Migrant CARE stressed that the state must not be negligent about the safety of its citizens amid wartime situations. The Indonesian government must immediately ensure the condition of Indonesian migrant workers in the Middle East by opening information and complaint channels in affected areas.

Subsequently, it should provide regular situation updates and prepare contingency measures and plans for their safety.

“As an organisation with networks and partners in the region, we have also included complaint numbers in the areas of Indramayu, Kebumen, Wonosobo, Jember, Banyuwangi, Lembata, East Flores, and Lombok,” said Wahyu.

This emergency desk provides services including consultation and accompaniment, complaints of abandonment and emergency cases, and legal assistance.
