Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that have escalated since US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February have sparked fresh concerns for global technology companies.

Massive investments in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector involving companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Oracle, and OpenAI now face substantial risks, with investment values at stake reaching trillions of US dollars.

For years, countries in the Persian Gulf region including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Qatar have actively attracted American technology companies and Wall Street investors to deploy capital in their territories. This initiative forms part of a long-term strategy to reduce their economic dependence on oil and gas revenues.

Through massive sovereign wealth fund schemes, Gulf governments have aggressively funded various new technology projects. Western investors have embraced these opportunities, viewing the Persian Gulf region as a promising new market, particularly amid surging demand for AI computing infrastructure.

Silicon Valley technology companies have been among the most active investors. Nvidia, Microsoft, and Oracle have deployed funds to build large-scale technology facilities across the region, including data centres that form the backbone of AI development.

However, the situation changed dramatically after armed conflict between Iran and the US-Israeli coalition erupted in recent days.

Strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran in late February triggered retaliatory responses from Iran. In those attacks, Iran targeted not only military facilities but also various non-military targets across Gulf countries.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported that one Availability Zone (AZ) in the ME-CENTRAL-1 region, specifically mec1-az2, was forced to cease operations due to the incident. As a result, several customers reported disruptions to cloud computing services, particularly Amazon EC2 network APIs.

Meanwhile, another facility in Bahrain sustained damage from similar attacks.

The deteriorating security situation has also prompted the US government to close several of its embassies across the Middle East, including those in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

These tensions have begun triggering concerns among global investors. A Financial Times report indicates that several Gulf states are now considering reducing their overseas investments due to the financial impact of the conflict.

Mona Yacoubian, director of the Middle East programme at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) think tank, stated that anxiety levels regarding this situation have risen sharply.

The conflict risk has become increasingly significant because the Gulf region currently hosts one of the world’s major centres for AI infrastructure development.

One of the largest projects under construction is Stargate UAE, a massive AI data centre project operated by OpenAI and Oracle and utilising top-tier AI chips from Nvidia. This project is funded by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX/G42 (Group 42 Holding Ltd), a consortium of AI companies in the United Arab Emirates.
