Micronesia offers bilateral cooperation
JAKARTA (JP): Micronesian President Bailey Olter offered
cooperation with Indonesian parties in forestry, fishery and
agriculture during his meeting with President Soeharto here
yesterday.
Minister/State Secretary Moerdiono said after the meeting at
the Merdeka Palace that the visiting Micronesian president also
invited Indonesian businesses to invest in his country.
"President Olter offered our businessmen, in particular to set
up joint ventures in the fish canning industry," Moerdiono told
journalist about subjects raised during the talks between the two
heads of states.
The Micronesian president and his delegation, including his
wife Amalia Olter, arrived on Thursday for a six-day visit.
In the state banquet held for the visiting president at the
State Palace last night, Soeharto called for the promotion of
cooperation among the Asia-Pacific countries, both under
bilateral and multilateral bases.
The Indonesian leader said the promotion of cooperation
between developing countries, in addition to the expansion of the
cooperation between developing and industrial nations, is
essential in paving the way for more prosperous and peaceful
world.
Today, the Micronesian leader and his delegates are scheduled
to visit the newly opened Fruit Park in Bogor, West Java, before
leaving for Bali tomorrow.
The delegates will spend two days in the resort island before
returning home on Tuesday.
Micronesia, an archipelago in the Pacific, has a population of
around 350,000 people. (hen)
