The rollout builds on a suite of safety measures first introduced by the tech giant in October 2025 across the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.

Bernie Moestafa, Meta’s Head of Public Policy for Indonesia, announced the expansion on Friday at a digital safety forum in Jakarta.

He explained that the PG-13 framework was chosen to give parents a universally understood benchmark for what their children can access.

“By default, teens will only see age-appropriate content, similar to what they see in movies,” Moestafa said.

The restrictions apply universally across all Instagram features for teen accounts, including Stories, Recommendations, Search, Comments, Direct Messages, and AI-driven experiences.

For parents seeking tighter oversight, Meta is also introducing a “Limited Content” setting.

This tier allows families to restrict content further if they feel standard PG-13 guidelines are still too mature for their children.

“For some parents, movies rated 13 and above may still be too mature,” Moestafa noted. “Therefore, we are also introducing a new, stricter setting called Limited Content, which filters more content within the teen account experience.”

The new settings complement more than 50 existing safety controls previously rolled out by Meta specifically tailored for users aged 13 to 15.

The initiative comes amid growing global pressure on social media conglomerates to bolster child protection measures and prevent underage users from encountering harmful material online.
