Meta Prepares Appeal After Being Fined Rp 6.3 Trillion Over This Issue
Social media giant Meta faces a $375 million fine, or about Rp 6.3 trillion, related to a consumer protection case. A jury found Meta guilty of breaching platform security and exploiting child users.
Citing detikInet on Thursday (26/3/2026), the case was filed by the New Mexico Attorney General in 2023. The prosecutor accused Meta of knowing that its platforms could pose dangers to child users, such as exploitation and mental health disturbances.
Ultimately, the jury determined that Meta was responsible for both counts of violating New Mexico’s consumer protection laws. Meta was deemed to have misled residents of the state about the safety of its services.
“Meta executives knew their products endangered children, ignored warnings from their own employees, and lied to the public about what they knew,” said New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez, as quoted from Engadget on Thursday (26/3).
“Today, the jury has joined families, educators, and child online safety experts in saying ‘enough is enough’,” he added.
During the trial, several internal Meta documents were presented to the jury. These included research results on mental health issues faced by teenagers, and emails from various Meta executives discussing safety issues such as sextortion, self-harm content, and sexual abuse.
Nevertheless, New Mexico’s opposition to Meta does not end here. The state is preparing arguments that Meta is a ‘public nuisance’ in a bench trial scheduled for May. Meanwhile, Meta itself has prepared to file an appeal against this ruling.
“With all due respect, we disagree with the verdict and will appeal. We have worked hard to keep people safe on our platforms and understand the challenges in identifying and removing bad actors or harmful content,” said Meta spokesperson Andy Stone in an official statement.
“We will continue to vigorously defend ourselves, and we remain confident in our track record of protecting teens online,” he added.
