Meta Grants Rival AI Chatbot Access on WhatsApp: Strategy or Regulatory Pressure?
Meta Platforms Inc. is reportedly preparing a major step by granting limited access to rival AI chatbots to integrate into the instant messaging platform WhatsApp. This move marks a significant shift in the ‘walled garden’ strategy that has long been pursued by the company led by Mark Zuckerberg. According to circulating reports, this access would allow users to interact with various large language models (LLMs) other than Meta AI directly within the WhatsApp app. However, the access is expected to be limited and remain under strict Meta security protocols. Industry analysts see two main drivers behind the policy: If realised, the integration would create direct competition within a single interface. Users could compare responses from Meta AI with rival chatbots in one chat window. It would also open new opportunities for mid-sized AI developers to reach billions of WhatsApp users without having to build their own messaging app infrastructure. Economically, the move is expected to affect the turnover of digital services. While initial access is reportedly free, long-term monetisation via an API is likely to involve transactions for service providers in Indonesia wanting to integrate their premium features. Data security remains a crucial issue. Meta must ensure that, even as data flows to third-party AIs, the end-to-end encryption that WhatsApp is known for is not compromised.
