Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid has expressed appreciation for the positive step taken by the major technology company Meta, which has committed to complying with Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Operators in Child Protection (PP Tunas). Meta, which oversees the social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has officially announced restrictions on access for users under the age of 16 starting from Thursday (9/4).

“We greatly appreciate Meta’s attitude of compliance with Indonesian regulations. They have demonstrated good faith in aligning their services with the applicable laws in the country,” said Meutya, as quoted from Antara on Thursday (9/4).

Previously, Meta’s social media platforms allowed children aged 13 and above to access their services. However, in accordance with the provisions of PP Tunas, now only users aged 16 and above can access Instagram, Facebook, and Threads in Indonesia.

Meta, through its legal representative and Asia Pacific public policy official Rafael Frankel, has confirmed changes to the Community Guidelines on their platforms. This restriction measure is taken to ensure their services are safe and compliant with applicable policies, particularly for child protection.

With more than 100 million active users in Indonesia, Meta has stated that the update will be implemented gradually until Friday (10/4). Accounts owned by users under 16 years old will be deactivated gradually during that period.

Menkomdigi emphasised that technical challenges are not an excuse for non-compliance with PP Tunas.

“This is a matter of commitment and good faith from major platforms to adhere to Indonesian law,” she added.

Since PP Tunas was enforced on 28 March 2026, several major platforms have begun implementing access restrictions for children, including Meta, X (formerly Twitter), and Bigo Live. Meanwhile, TikTok and Roblox have met some of the provisions regulated in PP Tunas, while Google, which owns YouTube, has not yet shown full commitment to this regulation.

Kemkomdigi has given a three-day deadline to Meta and Google to complete documents following an inspection of alleged violations of PP Tunas and its derivative rules.
