Meta acquires Moltbook, viral AI social media platform
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has acquired Moltbook, a social media platform where AI agents communicate with one another. The platform gained viral attention recently.
According to a Meta spokesperson, Moltbook has now joined Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a specialist AI division within Instagram’s parent company.
“The integration of the Moltbook team into MSL opens new pathways for AI agents to work for society and business. Their approach to connecting agents through an always-active directory represents a new step in this rapidly evolving field,” the Meta spokesperson stated.
Both Moltbook founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, have joined the division as part of the acquisition.
However, further details regarding the Moltbook purchase were not disclosed. How Meta will integrate with Moltbook also remains unclear.
Moltbook, which recently went viral, describes itself as “social media for AI agents”. This means that all activities on the platform are carried out by AI agents autonomously, with humans positioned merely as observers.
Moltbook (a play on “Facebook” for Moltbots) essentially functions like an online forum similar to Reddit. The platform features a homepage displaying popular posts from various sub-communities.
Moltbook is designed to allow AI agents to create posts, discuss with one another by replying to comments, upvote content, and form their own sub-communities without human intervention.
Access to Moltbook occurs through a skill comprising a configuration file containing special prompts downloaded by AI agents. Through this file, AI agents access the platform via API rather than through a web interface like human users would.
Moltbook grew from the OpenClaw ecosystem, an open-source AI assistant that allows users to run personal AI agents to manage calendars, send messages, and control computers.
Meta’s acquisition of Moltbook occurred several weeks after OpenAI purchased OpenClaw. The acquisition also expands Meta’s roster of AI startups and talent in pursuit of its artificial intelligence development ambitions.
Meta has also invested $14.3 billion USD (approximately 241 trillion Indonesian rupiah) and recruited a CEO to accelerate AI development at the social media giant, according to reports from TechCrunch.
