Merchant in Riau achieves Rp700,000 daily revenue after coaching from Baznas
Jakarta - Indonesia’s National Zakat Board (Baznas) has successfully empowered Wulan, a fried chicken vendor trained in Dumai City, Riau, who has managed to develop her business and generate daily revenue of up to Rp700,000 despite being pregnant.
“Praise be to God, thanks to assistance and support from Baznas, I am now able to earn between Rp300,000 and Rp700,000 per day—a figure I previously thought impossible to imagine. The income from this business has been crucial for daily needs and preparing for childbirth,” Wulan said in a statement received in Jakarta on Monday.
Wulan stated that mentoring from Baznas through the ZChicken programme enabled her to innovate with various menu items, including fried rice, noodles, seblak, and assorted snacks. This strategy has proven effective in increasing daily revenue.
She hopes the ZChicken programme will continue to expand so more people benefit similarly. For her, Baznas’s support not only provided a business opportunity but also fostered confidence for economic empowerment.
Saidah Sakwan, Head of Baznas Distribution and Empowerment Division, expressed pride in this success. She noted that the achievement demonstrates that zakat managed by Baznas delivers genuine impact for beneficiaries.
“The ZChicken programme exemplifies how zakat contributions from donors through Baznas genuinely reach those in need across the eight asnaf (categories of zakat recipients),” Saidah Sakwan said.
Saidah assessed that Wulan’s success reflects the genuine spirit of zakat beneficiaries in improving living standards amid constraints. Her pregnancy did not prevent her from remaining productive and expanding her business.
She emphasised that Baznas ensures every beneficiary receives ongoing mentoring. This means assistance becomes more than a short-term stimulus—it becomes a foundation for sustainable business.
Saidah hopes that Baznas’s zakat-based economic empowerment programmes will continue contributing to poverty alleviation and improved public welfare sustainably.
“This success is the fruit of donors’ trust. We encourage the public to pay zakat through Baznas so more small business owners among the underprivileged can be empowered,” Saidah Sakwan said.
The ZChicken programme is Baznas’s economic empowerment initiative providing business capital, cart equipment, and training in management and food standards to help low-income individuals achieve decent and sustainable income.
