Baturaja (ANTARA) - The Merah Putih Village Cooperative (KDMP) of Pusar Village, Ogan Komering Ulu Regency (OKU), South Sumatra, has commenced operations to boost the local economy through a cooperative approach based on the principles of mutual assistance and kinship.

The Regent of OKU, Teddy Meilwansyah, in Baturaja on Sunday, explained that the Merah Putih village cooperative is a programme for establishing cooperatives designed to be implemented at the village and sub-district level throughout Indonesia, initiated by President Prabowo Subianto.

“The establishment of Merah Putih village or sub-district cooperatives must be carried out as it aligns with the central government’s programme through coordination with the provincial government,” he said.

He stated that the establishment of the Merah Putih cooperative in Pusar Village is a strategic solution to encourage economic equality and improve community welfare.

On this occasion, the Regent expressed his appreciation and gratitude to President Prabowo Subianto for his attention to improving the economic welfare of the community through the Merah Putih cooperative programme.

“We should certainly appreciate Mr. President Prabowo’s initiative, which has given great attention to communities in remote villages by presenting the KDMP,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the OKU Cooperative and SME Office, Tommy, previously explained that so far, as many as 157 villages and sub-districts in the area have formed KDMP management bodies, reaching 100 per cent.

The KDMPs in 157 villages/sub-districts in OKU Regency are dominated by the agricultural sector, food crops, and plantations, as well as utilising the potential of each region.

The purpose of establishing the KDMP is to realise economic independence and community welfare in an inclusive and sustainable manner.

“This cooperative will become a centre for village economic activities, ranging from managing affordable basic necessities to distributing food,” he said.

He hopes that the cooperatives established in the future can be managed professionally, inclusively, and with full responsibility to improve the welfare of the community in the area.
