Melania Trump Leads UN Security Council Session, Advances Peace Mission Through Education
The First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, made history by becoming the first wife of a president to chair a meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday local time. The meeting centred on the broad theme of “Peace Through Education” amid an increasingly tense regional situation.
This moment occurred just days after airstrikes in Iran reportedly struck a primary school for girls in the city of Minab. According to local state media, the tragedy killed at least 168 children. To date, no official statement has been made regarding the party responsible for the attack, although US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that relevant authorities are investigating whether the attack originated from the United States.
During the meeting, UN Deputy Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo issued a strong statement regarding the impact of military operations on the education sector in the Middle East.
“Schools in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Amman have closed and shifted to remote learning due to military operations currently occurring in the region,” DiCarlo said. “We are aware of reports from Iran regarding the deaths of possibly dozens of children, allegedly caused by an attack that struck a primary school in the city of Minab.”
DiCarlo also emphasised a profound message to the forum. “Madam President, the most effective way to protect children from conflict is to prevent and stop war,” she added.
Melania Trump did not directly mention warfare in her address. However, she expressed deep condolences to the families of fallen US military members.
“Sincere condolences to the families of US service members who sacrificed their lives for freedom,” Melania stated in her remarks.
Beyond focusing on education, the US First Lady advocated efforts to close the “technology gap” at the global level. She championed the importance of connecting everyone with knowledge through artificial intelligence (AI), including those living in the most remote geographical regions of the world.
For her part, Rosemary DiCarlo expressed appreciation for Melania Trump’s efforts in raising visibility around the issue of children in conflict, including her personal work to return Ukrainian children from Russia.
Melania’s step to chair the Security Council marks a new diplomatic note for the White House, as President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continue to coordinate military operations that began the previous Saturday morning.
