Megawati's Letter to Iran's Government Expresses Condolences on the Death of Ali Khamenei
Jakarta – The fifth President of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, has sent a letter to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to convey profound condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following a sudden military attack by Israel and the United States against Iranian territory on 28 February 2026. The letter was delivered in person by PDIP Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto together with Ahmad Basarah, the PDIP’s head of foreign affairs, to Mohammad Boroujerdi, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, at the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta, on Tuesday, 3 March 2026.
After a brief dialogue and handing over Megawati’s condolence letter to the Iranian Government, Hasto shared the contents of the letter.
To His Excellency,
The Interim Leader, the President, and the entire people of the Islamic Republic of Iran, wherever you are
With respect,
With a heart shocked and deeply grieving, I, Prof. Dr. Megawati Soekarnoputri, as the fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia and on behalf of the extended family of Dr. (H.C.) Ir. Soekarno (Bung Karno), and as the General Chairperson of PDI Perjuangan, convey our condolences on the passing of His Excellency Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who perished in the sudden military attack carried out by Israel and the United States against Iranian territory on 28 February 2026. On my own behalf and on behalf of Bung Karno’s extended family and on behalf of the Indonesian nation and people who love peace, justice and the sovereignty of a free nation, I express our sincere sympathy and solidarity to the family, the government and all the people of Iran.
For more than three decades, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led his nation in very difficult circumstances, amid geopolitical pressures, economic sanctions and military threats, while consistently upholding the sovereignty of his country and the dignity of the Muslim world. In him we see a cleric and statesman who sought to combine religious faith, social justice, and an anti-imperialist stance within a single thread of consistent struggle.
For us in Indonesia, the figure of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei holds a spiritual closeness and resonance with Bung Karno’s struggle, the Father of the Nation, the Proclaimer and the first President of the Republic of Indonesia.
Accounts attest to how, from a young age, he admired Bung Karno, read his ideas, and drew on Indonesia’s experience, especially Pancasila and the Bandung Spirit (the Bandung Ten Principles), as references in formulating a synthesis between religion, nationalism and social justice in Iran. In his leadership we sense the echo of anti-colonialism, Third World solidarity, and the determination to reject all forms of domination and global injustice.
