Megawati's 2004 Tehran Visit: D-8 Diplomacy and Ideological Affinity
February 2004 marked a significant chapter in the diplomacy of Indonesia’s fifth president, Megawati Sukarnoputri, when she stepped foot in Tehran, Iran. The visit became a milestone in strengthening bilateral ties rooted in the solidarity of developing countries. Megawati’s official trip to Tehran was principally to attend the Fourth Summit of Developing-8 (D-8). The forum provides an economic cooperation framework for eight developing countries with Muslim-majority populations. In her speech, Megawati urged member states to bolster trade connectivity to reduce dependence on the global financial system that is often not favourable to developing nations.
One pivotal point of the journey was Megawati’s meeting with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The meeting took place in a warm and respectful atmosphere. Khamenei openly admired Bung Karno, Megawati’s father, who is considered the architect of the Non-Aligned Movement and an inspiration for nations striving for sovereignty.
Megawati recalled the meeting as a moment when the charisma of leadership shone strongly. In their dialogue, the two leaders discussed the importance of global social justice and rejection of all forms of modern imperialism. Megawati’s visit to Tehran in 2004 demonstrated that Indonesian diplomacy could stand tall amid diverse global interests. By carrying forward Bung Karno’s legacy, Megawati managed to rekindle emotional closeness with Iran that remained relevant for decades to come.
