Indonesia’s fifth president and leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, Megawati Soekarnoputri, has extended congratulations to Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, succeeding his late father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Megawati’s letter was delivered to Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi.

“This is my second letter; I am pleased that Iran now has its leader restored,” Megawati said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, 11 March.

Megawati made these remarks whilst receiving Boroujerdi at her residence in Menteng, Jakarta. During the meeting, Megawati was accompanied by Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto, along with senior party officials Ahmad Basarah, Yasonna Laoly, Eriko Sotarduga, and Andi Widjajanto, the head of the party’s research and policy analysis body.

Earlier, on 3 March 2026, Megawati sent a letter to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran expressing her deep condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following attacks by the United States and Israel.

In addition to the letter, Megawati also presented a photograph taken during her official visit to Tehran in 2004, when she met with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“This is evidence that I have a friendship relationship with the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,” Megawati stated.

The two engaged in warm conversation for over an hour. Following the meeting, with a smile on her face, Megawati presented a gift—a Balinese woven ikat shirt—to Ambassador Boroujerdi.

Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, the son of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, has been appointed to succeed his father as the new head of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Khamenei was designated as Supreme Leader by the country’s highest clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, in a statement published late Monday, 9 March, just over a week after his father’s death in a US-Israeli attack.

Several other candidates emerged for the top position, including Alireza Arafi, one of three members of the interim council leading the nation; hardliner Mohsen Araki; and Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the founder of the Islamic Republic in 1979. Ultimately, the Assembly of Experts selected Mojtaba Khamenei for Iran’s highest office.

This marks only the second time the 88-member body of senior clerics has supervised a leadership transition, the first being when Ali Khamenei was selected in 1989 following the death of Ruhollah Khomeini.
