Megawati demands cheap books
JAKARTA: Claiming to represent the frustration of many
housewives in the country, President Megawati Soekarnoputri
complained on Monday about the country's lack of commitment in
providing cheap books for students.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the Association of
Indonesian Publisher's (IKAPI) congress on Monday, Megawati said
the country should find ways to reduce the price of books.
"There is only one simple question here and that is whether
you (publishers) are demanding big profits or just settling for
adequate benefits," the President said.
"If we have a commitment to provide cheap books, it would keep
most mothers from having headaches every time a new school term
starts," Megawati said.
She said that books were a major factor in improving the
education system in the country.--JP
