Measles Outbreak Returns: Cough, Runny Nose, and Rash May Be Early Symptoms
Surabaya — Although measles is a highly contagious disease, it continues to receive insufficient public attention, particularly when patients fail to recognise early symptoms. This poses a significant threat to vulnerable groups including children and immunocompromised individuals.
Professor Irwanto Sp.A(K), a paediatric health specialist from Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), stated that identifying measles infection can be determined through symptoms including cough and runny nose accompanied by a characteristic rash.
“Before determining whether someone has contracted measles, one should first confirm the presence of measles symptoms such as cough, runny nose accompanied by a specific red rash on the back of the neck, and high fever,” said Professor Irwanto on Monday, 16 March 2026.
He noted that the risk of measles transmission in public spaces is extremely high, with direct contact with infected individuals serving as a primary transmission pathway. “Measles is a contagious disease with high mortality risk. Therefore, when someone tests positive, they should immediately isolate themselves from public spaces and vulnerable groups such as children,” he explained.
Children represent a particularly vulnerable group with developing immune systems. The high risk of measles complications has garnered serious attention from health professionals, prompting parents to vaccinate their children at the nearest health facility.
“We continue to enhance public education regarding the dangers of measles and the importance of vaccinating children as an effective solution to prevent measles outbreaks,” Irwanto said.
This support encompasses raising awareness among individuals about the importance of childhood vaccination from an early age and understanding measles-related risks. “Once again, measles is not an ordinary disease. The mortality risk should serve as a lesson for society not to underestimate the symptoms that develop,” he concluded.
