Measles Cases Rising in Indonesia, Pramono Encourages Vaccination Through Posyandu
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has assured the Jakarta Provincial Government will step up vaccination drives following the surge in measles cases across Indonesia. The effort will be reinforced through the posyandu network down to city and provincial levels.
Pramono said provincial-level posyandu teams and regency/city teams had just been sworn in. He asked that one of their main focuses be the socialisation of the importance of vaccination to the public.
‘Yesterday, coincidentally, the provincial and regency/city posyandu teams were just inaugurated, so one of their core duties is to socialise vaccination. Because in Jakarta I am drawing attention to two health concerns that are the focus of the Jakarta Provincial Government,’ Pramono said at City Hall on Wednesday (4/3/2026).
He noted that the two health issues of serious concern to the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government are tuberculosis (TB) and stunting. However, with the rise in measles cases, vaccination will be intensified further.
‘And when asked about measles, we will intensify vaccination,’ he added.
Pramono also responded to the emergence of anti-vaccine groups on social media. He stressed that public education, especially for parents, will continue to be reinforced through posyandu so that understanding of the importance of immunisation increases.
Earlier, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said measles cases in Indonesia were rising. Not only in Indonesia, measles is also gaining pace in many countries around the world.
Measles cases drew attention after the discovery of two Australian citizens who tested positive. Both are known to have travel histories from Indonesia.
Chair of the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) West Java, Prof Dr dr Anggraini Alam, SpA, said the global decline in measles vaccination coverage is one reason for the rise in cases, including in the country.
‘The global cause is also due to the waning coverage of measles vaccination. So measles vaccination coverage must remain high, and consistently so,’ Prof Anggi said in online media, Saturday (28/2).
