Mayors and regents hold rights meeting

JAKARTA: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened a three-day national coordinating meeting on Monday aimed at improving the protection of human rights around the country.

Held at the Sahid Jaya Hotel in Central Jakarta, the forum will discuss a human rights action plan that was launched in 2004.

The action plan consists of six main pillars: establishing and strengthening human rights institutions in the regions; preparing for the ratification of international human rights instruments; issuing the necessary ancillary regulations; making human rights education and familiarization a national movement; upholding human rights norms and standards; and continuing to monitor and evaluate progress in human rights protection around the country. --JP
