Materialism connection

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Wahono's remarks on the lack of sensitivity and vision in relation to people's problems (The Jakarta Post, Dec. 2, 1995), are a reality in our society.

It is sad to say that the nation is becoming materialist, where wealth is the only thing that matters.

In my view, we could soon be a member of a much enlarged western-style materialistic society. I want to comment on Wahono's remarks in connection with John Lennon's death on Dec. 8, 1980.

In The Ballad of John and Yoko, he wrote: "Last night the wife said, oh boy when you're dead, you don't take nothing but your soul. Think!" I think John was right.
