Mataram City Government Studies Policy on Cycling to Work to Save Fuel
The Mataram City Government (Pemkot) in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) is currently studying the obligation for employees to use pedal bicycles or cycle when commuting to the office. The city government describes this as part of efforts to save fuel (BBM) amid the ongoing global crisis. As reported by detikBali on Wednesday (25/3/2026), this was revealed by the Secretary General (Sekda) of Mataram City, Lalu Alwan Basri. Alwan stated that the policy is still awaiting technical instructions from the central government, particularly regarding the work-from-home (WFH) plan. “We are studying (WFH from the centre), we are waiting for the SOP,” said Alwan. He explained that the characteristics of Mataram City, which has relatively close distances between government offices, are deemed supportive of implementing bicycles as an official mode of transport, especially for officials. Eventually, there will be an obligation to use bicycles on certain days. “Cycling, but (its use) on certain days. When we already have a WFH decision from the central government, the Mayor has just taken a policy. He conveyed the policy that officials, especially echelon 2, 3, 4, will cycle from home to the office,” he said. Pemkot Mataram is also still calculating the radius of the travel distance that allows for the implementation of the policy, adjusting to the WFH policy if it is officially enforced.
