Mataram City Government, in West Nusa Tenggara Province, is beginning to prepare the drafting of regulations in the form of a Mayor Regulation (Perwal) as the legal basis for implementing the five-day school policy. Mataram Mayor H. Mohan Roliskana in Mataram, on Thursday, said the move was taken after reports that all schools implementing the policy had been able to adapt well. The evaluation results during the five-day school trial indicate it has been operating adaptively in practice and even gained support from parents, he said. That is the basis for the Mataram City Government to start drafting the Perwal so that the policy’s implementation has a stronger foundation and can apply officially on a permanent basis. “We will provide a legal umbrella to strengthen its on-the-ground implementation,” said the Mayor of Mataram. The mayor added that the regulation is targeted to become effective for the 2026/2027 academic year. The five-day school trial in Mataram City began on 12 January 2026, at the primary and middle school levels across Mataram City. It is said that the five-day school policy has long-term benefits that are far greater for children’s development and family harmony. The policy is an effort by the city government to improve the quality of students’ leisure time with their families and the efficiency of teachers’ lesson preparation for the following week. Therefore, teachers are also urged not to assign homework (PR) to students, so that children can rest after learning and activities at school for the five days. “After the five-day school implementation, we urge teachers not to give homework to students,” he said. Thus, after-school hours and weekend holidays are expected to provide children with rest and outdoor physical activities. “We hope teachers can complete lessons within class time, so there will be no homework for the children,” he said.
