JAKARTA – The stretch of Sarang Bango Road in Marunda to Malaka Road in Rorotan, North Jakarta, is being complained about by residents due to being covered in red soil, which makes the road slippery and dangerous for motorists.

Residents suspect this condition is triggered by activities from projects in the surrounding area. Jamal (45), one of the parking attendants nearby, said that the project activities in the area have been ongoing since this year’s fasting month.

“It’s over there (Malaka Road) with landfilling. It’s been going on for a while, actually since the fasting month. They stopped just before Eid but started again,” he explained when met by Kompas.com at the location on Tuesday (31/3/2026).

“The dirt started after Eid. Last Sunday was the dirtiest, with those trucks passing by often,” he added.

Similar sentiments were expressed by another resident, Sofyan (40), who believes the dirty road condition is caused by soil falling from project vehicles.

“Yes, this is because the soil spills from the project trucks. I don’t know what the project is, but you can see the remnants over there,” he said.

Sofyan added that residents had protested on Sunday afternoon because the road condition was getting worse. Officers had cleaned the area, but it became dirty again by nighttime.

“On Sunday afternoon, residents protested because it was getting messier. Then the officers came to clean it up right away. But by night it was messy again until morning,” he said.

“There seem to be about three motorbikes that fell. Because after rain it gets even slipperier,” he added.
