Mark Your Calendars: Peak Shopping Mall Visitation Expected on Second Day of Lebaran Holiday
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Shopping mall operators will prepare various activities to attract visitors during Lebaran Idul Fitri 1447H or 2026. Peak mall visitation is estimated to occur on H+1 Lebaran (the second day of the holiday).
Alphonzus Widjaja, Chairman General of the Indonesian Shopping Centre Association (APPBI), stated that the association will present various entertainment activities and thematic decorations to attract visitors.
“As usual, to welcome and enliven the celebration of major holidays, shopping centres will organise various events, attractions, activities and entertainment featuring arts, music, culture and other attractions to draw visitors to the shopping centres,” Alphonzus told CNBC Indonesia on Tuesday (17 March 2026).
With activities at malls during Lebaran, visitors will gain various unique experiences at shopping centres during the holiday.
“Visitors will obtain various unique and memorable experiences whilst at shopping centres with beautiful decorations that cannot be found in everyday conditions and situations,” he continued.
In addition, various promotional programmes will be prepared to encourage transactions during Ramadan and leading up to Lebaran.
“Shopping centres along with retailers will also prepare various attractive shopping promotion programmes for visitors to meet various needs for welcoming the holiday,” he explained.
One strategy promoted by mall operators is presenting midnight sale programmes ahead of Lebaran. Typically, this programme is held approximately two weeks before the holiday, coinciding with payday or the disbursement of Holiday Allowance (THR).
Several shopping centres have already scheduled midnight sales with varying durations, some lasting two to three days or held on specific weekends to attract more visitors.
Alphonzus emphasised that the momentum of unique activities combined with promotional or discount programmes at malls can make them one of the main shopping destinations for the public in the unique and impressive atmosphere of Idul Fitri.
“Customers together with their families can shop whilst enjoying the beauty of decorations, musical arrangements and other festive atmospheres,” he explained.
Previously, Alphonzus predicted that mall occupancy would increase, even surging on the second day of Lebaran or H+1 Lebaran. This is because typically, after conducting family visits with relatives on the first day of Lebaran, the public tends to visit malls.
“Visitation levels to shopping centres will increase again during the Idul Fitri holiday, particularly from the second day of Idul Fitri after the public celebrates and visits family, relatives and others,” Alphonzus told CNBC Indonesia on Tuesday (17 March 2026).
The association also predicts that public visitation levels to malls during Ramadan and Lebaran this year will increase by 10-15% compared to last year.
“It is estimated that average visitation levels to shopping centres before and during Ramadan and Idul Fitri will increase approximately 10-15% compared to last year,” he explained.
