Many Graduates from Top Chinese Universities Opt for Factory Jobs, Here's Why
Students in China are experiencing a surprising shift in career choices recently. Trends indicate that after graduation, they are more interested in seeking jobs in factories. Previously, many Chinese talents were absorbed by technology and financial companies. Quoted from Business Insider, the trend of Chinese students choosing factory work is clearly recorded by Tsinghua University, one of China’s most prestigious campuses. This figure serves as a strong signal that China’s best talents, once sought after by internet giants and investment banks, now prefer assembling physical components over just coding at a desk. Graduates from China’s most prestigious universities are now turning their gaze to the manufacturing and energy sectors. This change of direction is not without reason, but because the embodiment of “factories” in China has now evolved completely. Experts interviewed by Business Insider emphasise that the nature and definition of “manufacturing jobs” in China have changed drastically in line with the country’s strategy to strengthen its industrial base. They enter production facilities to develop electric vehicles (EVs), advanced semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), smart robotics, and green energy infrastructure. Factory floors have now transformed into world-class innovation laboratories that offer highly competitive salaries. This shift in interest from software to hardware is very much in line with Beijing’s long-term ambitions. Amid global geopolitical tensions and the chip war, China realises that independence in technology manufacturing is the key to survival and dominating the world market. With an injection of fresh talent from campuses like Tsinghua, China’s manufacturing sector is predicted to run even faster, leaving its competitors in Western countries behind, which are struggling to overcome the crisis of shortage of skilled workers in the manufacturing sector.
