Man ordered jailed for rape

SINGAPORE (AFP): A Singaporean business executive has been jailed for eight years and ordered to be caned six strokes by a local court for raping his Indonesian maid, news reports said yesterday.

Lam Mun Choon, 45, a father of three sons and a former prison officer, was convicted of raping the 25-year-old maid in her bedroom at midnight while his family was asleep in March last year.

High Court judicial commissioner Amarjeet Singh rejected Lam's defense that the maid, who is single, had consented to having sexual intercourse with him.

On the day before the offence, Lam allegedly went into the maid's room after watching television alone and tried to force himself on her even though she struggled and said: "Don't. No, sir," repeatedly.

He did not succeed in raping her that night. But on the following night, he went to her room and raped her.
