Man jailed for rape of maid

SINGAPORE (AP): The High Court sentenced a Singaporean man to
15 years in jail and 18 strokes of the cane for raping and
harassing his maid, a news report said Saturday.

Loo Cheng Lip, a married man with two young children,
terrorized the 26 year-old Indonesian maid over a period of four
months, the Straits Times reported.

The report could not be confirmed with the High Court because
its offices were closed Saturday.

The report said Loo, an oil company technician, forced the
maid to strip on the first day she started work. He harassed her
constantly for sex and finally raped her.

A police report was filed after the victim managed to confide
in another maid when no one was at home.

Loo pleaded guilty to the rape.

There are about 100,000 foreign maids working in Singapore, a
wealthy Southeast Asian city-state of 3.2 million people. Most of
the maids come from the Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
