Man Arrested for Stealing Money from Nasi Uduk Vendor in Bekasi
The Special Sub-Directorate of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Bekasi Police has uncovered a case of theft involving the money of Atnah, a 65-year-old Nasi Uduk vendor, in the Pondok Melati area, Bekasi City, West Java. The perpetrator, identified as TR, also known as Billy, 46, was arrested at his home in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, on Friday, February 20th. Based on police investigations, TR admitted to frequently committing thefts in Bekasi and its surrounding areas. For his actions, TR will be charged under Article 479 of the Criminal Code regarding theft, with a maximum penalty of nine years in prison. Prior to stealing the money from Atnah, TR had also previously snatched the bag of another Nasi Uduk vendor. This incident went viral after being recorded by CCTV in the Jatiwaringin area, Bekasi City, on January 2, 2026. In the video footage, the perpetrator stole a bag hanging on a fence containing Rp7.5 million in cash belonging to an elderly Nasi Uduk vendor. The perpetrator pretended to be a customer to deceive the victim. Upon realizing the perpetrator’s actions, the victim intercepted and pulled the perpetrator, who was trying to escape on a motorcycle. However, the elderly victim fell, and the perpetrator managed to escape. Subsequently, TR committed a similar act on February 17th in Pondok Melati, Bekasi City, where he stole Rp700,000 in sales money while the vendor was distracted. This incident also went viral after being recorded by CCTV. Many showed sympathy for Atnah, including the Mayor of Bekasi, Tri Adhianto, who provided financial assistance to the victim to help her resume her business.
