Malaysia's power tariff

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia is to closely study a proposal
for a tariff increase submitted by the national power giant
Tenaga Nasional Bhd., a senior minister said yesterday.

"When the study is completed, we will explain the review but
at this point it is still at discussion stage," Energy,
Telecommunications and Posts Leo Moggie was quoted as saying by
Bernama, the national news agency.

Tenaga Nasional executive chairman Ahmad Tajuddin Ali said
Thursday that a tariff hike proposal was submitted to the
government.

The proposals included measures to help keep tariff rates
competitive while allowing Tenaga to remain viable in a bid to
raise funds on the capital market.

The proposal, submitted two weeks ago, also outlined steps to
ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to manufacturers with
provisions for standby generators in the event of outages.
