Malaysian Tourists Flock to PIK, Even Opening Local Goods Proxy Shopping Services
Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) has become one of Jakarta’s favoured tourist destinations among visitors from Malaysia. According to data from the PIK Tourism Board, Malaysian tourists dominate the number of foreign visitors to PIK throughout the year. “So for Malaysia, it might be monotonous, always present throughout the year,” said Ricky Adiputra, Tourism Planning from the PIK Tourism Board, when met by Kompas.com at PIK on Saturday (21/3/2026). Without specifying the exact number of Malaysian tourist visits to Indonesia, Ricky noted that Malaysian tourists are known for their fondness for shopping. Not only for personal purchases, they are also known to offer proxy shopping services (jastip) for local goods to bring back to their country. “They like going to By The Sea, there in the afternoon hours, from noon to evening, all carrying suitcases. So either they arrive from the airport and shop straight away or before heading back to Malaysia, they stop by here,” Ricky revealed. By The Sea PIK is a tropical-themed retail outlet in PIK that sells various local brand products. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Malaysian tourists indeed dominated foreign tourist visits to Indonesia throughout 2025. Malaysia became the largest contributor of foreign tourists with a total of 17.3 per cent, as reported by Kompas.com. This was followed by Singapore with 14.5 per cent, Australia with 11 per cent, Timor Leste with 8 per cent, then China, India, South Korea, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and other countries. The majority of tourists from Malaysia enter Indonesia via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten.
