Malaysia to accept bids for radar

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): Malaysia will start accepting bids for
a second mobile radar at Kuala Lumpur's Subang international
airport by the end of the month, Transport Minister Datuk Ling
Liong Sik said yesterday.

Ling said the bidding would be restricted to five foreign
companies, one each from France, Italy, South Africa, Britain and
the United States.

Bidding would open in a week to 10 days, as soon as the
transport ministry received specifications for the radar, the
national news agency Bernama reported on Thursday.

A fire at Subang knocked out the key airport radar on August
13 last year causing weeks of flight disruptions and two near
collisions at the airport.

The South African mobile radar was flown to Kuala Lumpur and
installed some two weeks after the fire.
