Malaysia police sue 'Asiaweek'

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian police have lodged a report
against Asiaweek magazine over an article about break-ins at
residences of foreign diplomats in the country, a news report
said yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Bakri Omar said the report, under
the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, would enable a
probe into false allegations in the article titled Hardship in
Asiaweek's Oct. 3 issue. The magazine is distributed here ahead
of its listed date.

"The article in the magazine stating that there were 100 cases
of break-ins and robberies involving foreign diplomats within a
period of two years, is completely unfounded," Bakri was reported
as saying in The Star.

There were 12 criminal cases reported involving the residences
or offices of foreign diplomats last year, and seven had been
reported this year, he said.

Asiaweek also quoted some diplomats, without identifying them
or their countries, as saying Malaysian authorities were not
giving adequate attention to their security problems.
