Malaysia jails 72 for cockfighting

KUALA LUMPUR (UPI): Malaysia has jailed 72 men, including 67 Indonesians, after a raid on a cockfight, officials said Monday.

The men were sentenced to four months in jail and fines of US$1,176, or an additional three months in jail, by the Malaysian Magistrate's Court.

All the defendants, who ranged in age from 16 to 60, pleaded guilty.

Police also confiscated more than $9,100, which was believed to have been used for bets.

Seven of the Indonesians were found to be without valid travel documents, and two of the Malaysians were identified as military personnel, a police spokesman said.

In addition to the men arrested, police also seized 36 cocks, four of which were already dead, and currencies from Singapore, Brunei, China and Indonesia, officials said.
